Porsche followed its inaugural 911 Sport Classic, launched in 2009 on the type 997 platform, with a 2023 model based on the type 992. Like the previous version, it reinterprets iconic design elements from past Porsches, only this time it would be offered in the United States, unlike before, with production limited to 1,250 units worldwide.

Heritage-inspired features include a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) “duck tail” spoiler, a fresh take on the company’s iconic Fuchs wheels, and a Porsche crest nearly identical to the version from 1963. The “double bubble” CFRP roof introduced on the 2009 Sport Classic returned on the 2023 model, joined by a front hood in the same lightweight material and with a narrower indent to match the roof. A special lip spoiler sets off the front end, while badging with heritage script is executed in real gold.

Based on the type-992 911 Turbo S, the Sport Classic benefits from that model’s ample performance features, but with a seven-speed manual gearbox rather than a dual-clutch PDK transmission, and rear-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive, for a more involved driving experience. The Sport Classic also retains the Turbo S’s wider rear fenders, albeit without cooling vents for a cleaner look.

Interior finishes recall Porsches of the sixties and seventies, with high-end, semi-aniline leather, open-pore wood trim, and “Pepita” houndstooth cloth inserts. Subtler touches unique to the Sport Classic include retro dials for the tachometer and Sport Chrono clock, embossing on the center console lid and headrests, unique door-sill plates, Race-Tex fabric on the headliner and roof pillars, and leather-lined sun visors, steering column, and air-vent slats.

Porsche offered a limited palette of colors, including the model-exclusive Sport Grey Metallic—inspired by Fashion Grey, first applied to the Porsche 356—as well as non-metallic Black, Agate Grey Metallic, and Gentian Blue Metallic. The example offered here, however, is finished in paint-to-sample British Racing Green—a $12,830 option custom-ordered through Porsche’s Exclusive Manufaktur program. Silver accent graphics complement the special color, while the interior features Cognac semi-aniline leather with the retro Pepita inserts. Other factory options include power-folding mirrors, under-door puddle lights, ionizer, ambient lighting, fire extinguisher, aluminum pedals and footrest, Burmester high-end surround sound system, Surround View, and lane-change assist.

Sold new in Houston, Texas, this 911 Sport Classic stands out, even among its rare brethren, with its custom-ordered features. Showing 1,075.3 miles at cataloguing time, it offers enthusiasts who value exclusivity and appreciate the elegance and heritage of vintage styling cues a rare opportunity to own a hard-to-get modern-day classic that also delivers the impressive performance of the formidable 911 Turbo S.
