Victorious at Le Mans four years in succession, and in no less than seven Mille Miglias, the credentials of Alfa Romeo’s 8C 2300 are beyond reproach. While authentic examples are understandably among the most coveted of all vintage motorcars, the Argentinian firm of Pur Sang builds truly extraordinary recreations of these hallowed Alfa Romeos. Each car is carefully hand-built and designed not merely as a recreation but a literal “new” car that is true to the original in every important sense.
This 8C 2300 Corto Spider by Pur Sang is an exacting recreation of one of the Touring-bodied cars. Its sporting design is executed in aluminum and features integrated fenders, small doors, steeply raked windshield, and a lengthy, louvre-rich bonnet. The build further boasts one of the most distinctive and rare elements of the Touring Spider design: the finned, aerodynamic shroud affixed to the rear deck. Guiding airflow over the twin spare wheels, the shroud is crowned by a short dorsal fin which elegantly divides the top deck into two stowage compartments, each secured with leather straps.
Finished in Rosso Monza, an impressive dark red hue reminiscent of the competition colors worn by many 8C 2300s in period, the car derives power from an equally impressive 2.3-liter engine facsimile of the original Jano-designed unit, complete with dual-overhead-camshaft configuration and a polished, finned Roots-type supercharger.
After display at France’s Auto-Moto Classic Toulouse in 2021 and participating in the centennial anniversary of the roadgoing Semblancay Grand Prix and the Sport & Collection Concours in 2023, the car was imported to the United States in 2024 and treated to nearly $26,000 in service work and detailing by pre-war specialist Proper Noise of Redding, Pennsylvania. Work is documented to have included a thorough sorting of the ignition, braking, and supercharging systems as well as a carburetor rebuild and paint correction.
This Pur Sang 8C 2300 Corto Spider Recreation flawlessly combines the timeless allure of the Alfa Romeo 8C with subtle modern refinements, providing true enthusiasts the thrill of pre-war motor racing while preserving the original’s defining hallmarks.
