The W113-generation of Mercedes-Benz SL surely ranks among the most stylish automotive designs of all time. Making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1963, the range launched with the 230 SL, the number denoting the size of the 2.3-litre straight-six engine. Capacity grew by 200-cc for 1966 before the final edition, the 280, entered production in December 1967. Ultimately equipped with a 2,778-cc motor delivering 170 horsepower, the 280 SL proved the most popular variant as some 23,885 examples rolled out of the factory gates before the model bowed out in 1971.

From towards the start of the 280 SL’s lifespan, this right-hand-drive example was registered new in the United Kingdom on 16 September 1968. According to the accompanying service records, the car visited Offley Hill Service Station of Hertfordshire a month later, where it was noted as displaying 265 miles. Equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission fit for the most comfortable of grand tourers, this car was subsequently advertised for sale by tender in a 1977 newspaper with Foll & Parker of Milton Keynes, then showing 6,599 miles.

That listing attracted the attention of the consigning family, who have remarkably owned this 280 SL ever since. Another entry in the service book notes a 2 April 1984 visit to Eyebury Motors of Peterborough, at which point the car was shown as having covered 31,962 miles. Later MoT certificates spanning 1999 to 2011, all issued by Graveley Garage of St Neots, reflect that this car was then used sparingly, covering approximately 500 miles per year.

Please note that this car has been kept in dry storage for a number of years. The car is running and driving but will require further recommissioning prior to extended use.

Presented in the rare colour combination of Beige Grey over brown leather upholstery and complemented by its owner’s guides, this timelessly beautiful 280 SL has enjoyed single-family ownership for almost half a century and is now ready for its next custodian.
