For decades the mantra of General Motors’ legendary Design Chief Harley Earl had been, “Go all the way, then back off.” The 1958 Buick did not back off. In an era when the American motoring public considered bigger to be better, and too much chrome to be just right, what was advertised as “The Air Born B-58 Buick” gave the people what they said they wanted. No US-built automobile of its decade carried more brightwork, led—on the brochure cover and in reality—by a remarkable grille composed of 160 individual, faceted chrome squares.

Alas, Detroit as a whole was caught unaware by the flash “Eisenhower Recession” of 1958, and sales of the glittering dreamboats—designed and planned in the headier days of 1956—were hit hard across the line. As it turned out, the 1958 Buick would thus be a unique, one-year-only offering, including its newly introduced top-of-the-line Limited series. The Limited had been born out of a spirit of one-upmanship across American automaking, which saw many upper-line manufacturers introduce an “ultimate” model. In Buick’s line that extended, literally, to a car built on a lengthened 127½-inch wheelbase, with more sumptuous interior appointments, essentially all available factory options as standard equipment, and, yes, even more chrome—notably, “hash marks” that ran along the rear fenders.

All Limited styles were rare, including the two-door hardtop Riviera Coupe, of which 1,026 were made—scarcely more than the companion 839 convertibles.

The Riviera Coupe offered here was, like the Limited convertible also included in this sale, formerly part of a large, noted collection in Southern California, whose owner had a yen for ultimate models from American manufacturers—often, in sets. Accordingly, both of the collection’s Limiteds underwent concours-quality restorations in Arizona, in a matching year-correct hue of Silver Mist, in this case with a Carlsbad Black roof to match the convertible’s top fabric. Afterward the “match set” was acquired by the present owner, a longtime enthusiast himself of 1950s American cars, and has since been well upkept in his own prominent stable. Since purchase in 2024, the Riviera Coupe has been maintained with a rebuild of its correct Flight Pitch Triple Turbine automatic transmission and of its power brake system and fitted with a new wiring harness; a modern General Motors air conditioning system has been installed.

An exceptional example of the bold, brassy, unforgettable Limited, this is a superior 1958 Buick.
