Introduced in 1955, the Bentley S1 and its Rolls-Royce companion, the Silver Cloud, represented the firm’s first ground-up redesign of its standard production car since World War II. In production until 1959, a 4.9-liter inline six-cylinder engine fed by twin carburetors and mated to a four-speed automatic transmission provided exceedingly smooth motoring. More refined than the outgoing R-Type, the new Bentley featured a longer wheelbase, more compliant suspension, lighter steering, and better brakes. Exterior styling took a substantial step forward on the standard steel bodies with a lower roofline and integrated fenders, while the traditional Bentley grille remained proudly upright.

According to a copy of its factory build sheet on file, this Bentley S1 Saloon was completed in the summer of 1955 with the customer listed as “P.J. Evans Ltd. for Francis Nicholls Ltd.” From the factory, the standard steel body sported a Black exterior with a fine Silver line over a Blue interior with Blue piping and a Grey headliner.

Correspondence on file indicates that the Bentley was restored prior to joining The Hadfield Family Collection in 1990 and notes various systems that required further attention at the time. Photos from the restoration in the accompanying history file show the S1 Saloon partially dismantled. Decades after this work, the vehicle presents with expected, honest wear from the intervening years of conscientious use. The attractively finished exterior now features a lovely two-tone scheme of Peacock over Westminster Blue, while the interior is classic Bentley with tan hides complemented by abundant wood and chrome trim. A set of Rolls-Royce-branded luggage fits neatly in the trunk and provides ample, stylish storage for touring.

The Bentley S1 represents an appealing sweet spot in the post-war Bentley range with its smooth six-cylinder engine and compliant road manners. As such, this restored example makes for a wonderful entry into the world of traditional British luxury motoring.
