By the eve of World War II, Buick had established an enviable reputation for combining luxury, refinement, advanced engineering, and strong performance at prices below those of many prestige marques. Under company President Harlow Curtice, Buick occupied an important position within General Motors, offering buyers a broad hierarchy of automobiles ranging from the relatively accessible Special through the imposing Limited.

Among the most compelling models in this expansive lineup was the Series 60 Century. Built on a 126-inch wheelbase, the Century combined a comparatively compact chassis with Buick's larger 320.2-cubic-inch overhead-valve inline-eight, producing 141 horsepower. The resulting combination of relatively light weight and abundant power made the Century one of the fastest American production automobiles of its era and established a performance formula that would remain central to the model's identity.

At the top of the Century range for 1940 was the striking Model 61C Convertible Phaeton. Its four-door Fisher body offered seating for five beneath a folding top, and with the top lowered, the absence of a fixed center pillar created an especially clean and sporting profile. Only 194 were produced for the model year, making the 61C one of the most exclusive Century configurations and an uncommon survivor today.

The trim tag of this 1940 Century Convertible Phaeton indicates that it was delivered from Buick's Flint factory finished in Acadia Gray over red leather. Now finished in black, the dark exterior presents handsomely in combination with the Century's tan fabric top and red interior. Particularly distinctive are its dual covered side-mounted spare wheels, which lend the Buick an imposing pre-war appearance. Additional period features include Trippe Speedlight fog lamps, bumper overriders, rear fender skirts, chrome wheel covers and trim rings, and whitewall tires.

The car is presently fitted with engine number 43687106, understood to be a 248-cubic-inch Buick inline-eight, rather than the 320.2-cubic-inch engine originally specified for the Series 60 Century. Prospective bidders are encouraged to satisfy themselves as to the specifications and originality of its mechanical components.

With its flowing fenders, four-door open coachwork, disappearing folding top, and period accessories, the Convertible Phaeton represents one of the most visually distinctive Buicks of the immediate pre-war era. Produced in just 194 examples, this rare Model 61C offers its next caretaker an excellent opportunity for further recommissioning and enjoyment at tours, shows, and marque events.
