The Ford Model 48 replaced the Model 40 for the 1935 model year. Although the 112-inch wheelbase remained, styling was updated with a lower, more streamlined appearance. A narrower radiator grille eschewed the previous V-shaped base and featured four horizontal bars, echoed in the new trio of chromed stripes that cut across the hood louvers. The windshield was more raked, and the cowl lamps disappeared in favor of parking lamps integrated into the headlights, whose shells were now body colored. Significantly, the Model 48 was the first Ford offered with a built-in trunk, and all variants now featured front-hinged doors. The inline four-cylinder engine was discontinued, leaving the 221-cubic-inch 90-degree L-head V-8 carried over from the Model 40 as the only engine. It was paired with the familiar three-speed, sliding-gear transmission also found on previous models. Of the 15 different body styles offered on the Model 48, the DeLuxe Phaeton was among the rarest, with only 6,073 produced for 1935. Ford replaced the Model 48 with the Model 68 for 1936.

This DeLuxe Phaeton has benefited from an older frame-on restoration and is handsomely finished in Cordoba Gray over brown upholstery with a tan canvas top, an impactful but subdued combination that falls in line with 1930s aesthetics. External details unique to DeLuxe models include brightwork on the windshield and grille, dual exposed horns, and twin taillights, all finished with great luster on this example. Inside the four-passenger interior, the painted dashboard features basic instrumentation along with a modern temperature gauge and a signal stalk. The car rides on wide whitewall tires mounted to Cinnabar Red wire wheels with chrome trim rings and hubcaps.

Well persevered over the years following its restoration in 2010, this lovely Model 48 DeLuxe Phaeton’s handsome color scheme and fine detailing make it a superb candidate for touring, where it will surely inspire pride in its next owner while enjoying the drive.
