Ford replaced the single-year Model 48 with the Model 68 for 1936. It too would be produced for only one year. Though the 112-inch wheelbase and overall body design carried over, front-end styling was once again updated, this time with new fenders and a radiator grille that wrapped further around the sides of the hood and featured vertical bars. Redesigned hood louvers and a larger capacity radiator improved engine cooling. Though output for the familiar 221-cubic-inch L-head V-8 engine remained at 85 horsepower, several improvements were made, including the addition of domed aluminum pistons and new main bearings.

DeLuxe models such as the stylish four-door Phaeton offered here featured chrome trim around the grille, windshield, and headlamps. Also exclusive to DeLuxe models were dual taillights and horns, with the latter now being concealed behind screens in the fender catwalks. This restored Phaeton is finished in a rich brown-on-brown color scheme offset by a tan canvas soft-top. Driver-focused details, as aesthetically pleasing as they are useful, include an exterior mirror, artfully etched glass wind wing, and windshield wiper. The interior is well finished with crisp upholstery, a banjo steering wheel, and wood-grain dash. A pair of driving lights is positioned just ahead of the concealed dual horns. The car rides on whitewall tires mounted to chromed, pressed-steel wheels with chromed hubcaps, while dual taillights flank a rear-mounted, covered spare.

Four-door Phaetons were among the rarer body styles for 1936 with only 5,555 produced, making this nicely restored example even more desirable. With Edsel Ford’s attractive greyhound radiator mascot leading the way, this well-presented Model 68 Phaeton exudes character and finesse and begs to be enjoyed top-down on leisurely sunny days.
