The Chrysler Town and Country was introduced in 1941, with an ash- and mahogany-framed body and hand-built with techniques more closely associated with fine wooden boat construction. It projected an image of affluence and leisure that increased traffic at Chrysler dealerships nationwide.

For 1946, the convertible coupe variant was introduced, replacing the more utilitarian four-door station wagon. The Town and Country convertible was based on the upscale New Yorker series, yet it offered a wide variety of luxurious appointments in addition to the New Yorker’s many standard features. With a starting price of $3,420, it was the most expensive Chrysler model available. Heightened public interest in the new Chrysler model, enticed by a two-page spread in the widely read Saturday Evening Post, prevented the firm from making clay models or prototypes. As a result, the car was reportedly built just from sketches to meet looming production schedules.

The 1947 model offered here was an Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) Senior First Prize winner in 1986, and has been part of Thomas F. Derro’s renowned collection since 1993. Its original body tag, which is still present, notes that it was originally finished in this exceptionally elegant color combination of Newport Blue with a blue leather and pleated tan broadcloth interior. Well-accessorized in Mr. Derro’s preferred fashion, it boasts front and rear bumper guards, correct MoPar fog lights and spotlights, as well as the iconic jukebox-like dashboard with its push-button radio, clock, and heater. The odometer recorded 40,606 miles at the time of cataloguing, and the restoration remains in remarkable, nearly fresh condition.

For the enthusiast seeking a beautifully presented Town and Country to drive and enjoy, there are few better available.
