42 hp, 350/499 cc OHV single-cylinder engine.

BSA TT rider Wal Handley won a gold star for lapping at over 100 mph at Brooklands in 1937, and the next year, the BSA Gold Star was introduced. It would become a 1950s icon and beloved of café racers everywhere. The final version was the DBD 34, produced until 1962, with up to 42 horsepower and 110 mph of top speed. It won the Clubman’s TT race at the Isle of Man every year from 1949–1957.

Most “Goldies” seen today are the Clubman’s model, with clip-on bars, and rear-set footpegs. A high-bar touring model like this one is uncommon, especially one in such superb condition. Aggressive and high-gear-capable of 70 mph in first, a Goldie is an uncompromising ride, but the “twittering” exhaust and 100 mph capability is never forgotten.
