The BMW 327, introduced in 1937 as a cabriolet, represented a dramatic shift in design and capability compared to the earlier 326. Its design was sleek and sensual; body panels were shaped and placed by hand, creating an elegant shape that appeared to move even while the car was standing still. It shared some mechanical components with the 326, but with refined performance; the car’s inline-six model was enough to propel the car to a respectable 125 km/h top speed.

BMW would further up the ante by offering buyers of the 327 the M328 engine from the 328 sports car as an option, further increasing the performance capabilities of the model; the result was the 327/28, of which only 569 are believed to have been produced.

This example, chassis 74208, was originally delivered in July 1938 to BMW works motorcycle racer, Ernst J. Henne. Fitting for a man of his talents, the Cabriolet featured the powerful M328 engine and was finished in a subtle gray exterior similar to what can be seen on the car today. The BMW was reported to have remained in Europe for almost the entirety of its existence, and in the early 2000s, the bodywork was restored by a French coachbuilder. Gene Ponder purchased the car in 2018 and would continue the restoration on the car both mechanically and cosmetically; it is presently fitted with a Bristol-manufactured BMW-type cylinder head. Invoices are available within the cars file and detail the work done at this time.

With a beautiful 1930s styling, a legendary motor, and equally fascinating provenance, this BMW 327/38 Cabriolet on offer makes for a fantastic pre-war collectable that will be welcome on any show field in the country. It is also an ideal prospect for rallying and touring, where the celebrated driving dynamics of the 327 will provide miles of enjoyment for whoever is lucky enough to take the wheel.
