Designed by Gérard Ducarouge, the 97T was competed by Lotus throughout the 1985 season under the iconic black-and-gold livery. That year, Lotus lost longtime driver Nigel Mansell to rival Williams. He was replaced by the up-and-coming Ayrton Senna, who, along with teammate Elio de Angelis, led the team to eight poles and nine podium finishes. The season was highlighted by three grand prix wins, including back-to-back wins in Portugal and San Marino by Senna and de Angelis, respectively, followed up by a second win for Senna at the Belgium GP.
