For 1958, the styling of the full-size Chevrolets was fresh and new and the cars were longer, lower, wider and more luxurious. The trusty 283 remained the mainstay powerplant (as in this car), but new for 1958 was the first of the company’s legendary big-blocks. The new 348 was available in four different states of tune. Despite a weak American economy, Chevrolet’s sales remained strong, and the new high-line Impala series accounted for more than 15-percent of sales. Chevrolet continued to dominate the low price field, with more than 1.1 million cars sold.

This Bel Air Sport Coupe is an older restoration that was originally finished in paint Code 932, which indicates Clay Coral; the roof is presented in white. The body lines are highlighted by excellent brightwork that is distinctive and runs the length of the car. Under the hood is a 283-cid V-8 with dual exhaust and a column-shift automatic transmission. The chassis comes equipped with independent front coil spring suspension and live rear axle suspension. This car has been fitted with front disc brakes. The interior has bench seats that are a salmon-tone in color. This Bel Air has power steering and brakes; original instrument pod, factory spinner wheel covers, whitewall tires, Chevrolet “Cool Pack” air conditioning, dual mirrors, clock, matching Continental kit, cassette player and all of the sportiness and period elegance that this model of Bel Air brings with it.

This car was generously donated to McPherson College in McPherson, Kansas to be sold with the proceeds being used to fund shop projects. It was utilized by the students to learn about chassis systems and engine tuning. McPherson stands alone as the only school to provide a bachelor’s degree in Restoration Technology. It merits note in its in-depth learning program with dedicated instructors who personalize the students experience; leading them on their way to continue on and build their resume’s within our precious hobby. This is a wonderful car for you to enjoy, and in turn will help many student hobbyists on their way to a professional vintage car career.
