Mercedes-Benz’s elegant Paul Bracq–designed W111 made its debut in 1959 and was produced, in its many variations, through 1971. Among the most desirable variations were the two-door models—the 280 SE Cabriolet and Coupe—which were expensive, virtually hand-built automobiles in the great tradition of German craftsmanship. The acres of wood trim throughout the interior were all genuine solid hardwood, accented by the gentle use of brightwork; the leather upholstery was thick and comfortable, and both the ride quality and handling were superb. Perhaps unsurprisingly, these cars rapidly became favorites of international socialites and celebrities, and they were frequently seen cruising around the world’s most posh destinations.

Delivered new to southern California, and still wearing its instantly recognizable California Black Plate, this 1969 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Coupe is said to have remained under the care of its original owner for roughly 40 years. Originally finished in Light Ivory paint over black leather, the car was restored to its current condition after being acquired by its second owner around 2009. During its time within the Iannelli collection, the car has received continued maintenance in order to keep the various systems functioning in good order.

Invoices on file from 2009 up to 2020 detail an immense amount of work carried out on the Mercedes-Benz, with a great deal of the parts for the project supplied directly by Mercedes-Benz Classic in Irvine, California. Now showing in truly spectacular condition, the exterior is finished in a two-tone scheme with a silver metallic body and black roof and hub caps. The equally svelte interior is finished with black leather and refinished wood trim. The dashboard is additionally furnished with a Blaupunkt stereo and an air conditioning system.

The car is accompanied by invoice copies, a set of owner’s manuals, an ID tag, the warranty card, and copies of the data cards.

Timelessly elegant, the Mercedes-Benz 280 SE Coupe endures as a status symbol over half a century beyond its introduction. A wonderful tour and show car thanks to its quality and usability, this Mercedes-Benz is the perfect addition to any collection.
