R5642 is built to full R3 specs with the optional “Powershift” automatic transmission, a rear axle ratio of 3.54:1, and disc brakes manufactured by Bendix under license from Dunlop. This car has the optional quick-ratio steering with no power assist, and it rolls on a set of 15-inch Halibrand magnesium knockoff alloy wheels—a Studebaker option for 1964. The interior is finished in metallic red upholstery with black carpeting and shows the R3’s 8,000 rpm tach instead of the 6,000 rpm tach found on standard Avanti models. The seats are true buckets, and the window posts and other sections of the interior, including the roll bar, are protected with foam-backed stitched vinyl, not molded plastic.

This Avanti R3 was delivered new to Moline, Illinois, finished in white with an automatic transmission. The car is believed to be in original condition with the exception of one repaint. It’s believed to be the second-to-last Avanti produced, and one of only nine of the highly desirable R3 supercharged examples. The car is formerly of the John O’Quinn Collection and presents beautifully today. In 2003 the car was featured on the cover of Avanti Magazine’s spring/summer issue. Considering R3-powered Avantis’ rarity and this car’s beautiful condition, this is an excellent opportunity to purchase a wonderful example of the marque.
