250 bhp, 6,332 cc SOHC V-8 engine with Bosch mechanical fuel injection, four-speed automatic transmission, double wishbone air-spring independent front suspension, swing-axle rear suspension with air springs, and four-wheel servo-assisted hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 3,302 mm
As a worthy successor to the ‘Grosser’ Mercedes-Benz 770 of the past, the all-new 600 sedan debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1963. Representing state-of-the-art automotive engineering in just about every department, the newcomer featured an overhead camshaft, fuel-injected 6.3-litre V-8 engine, air suspension with variable ride control, a four-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel disc brakes, power-assisted steering, central locking, and separate heating and ventilation systems for the front and rear compartments.
Built in short-wheelbase saloon and nine-passenger long-wheelbase limousine forms, which made it beloved by heads of state, the imposing 600 was endowed with respectable performance nonetheless, reaching 60 mph in a little under 10 seconds and exceeding 125 mph flat out.
This 600 Sedan is one such short-wheelbase model. A US-delivery car, it was sold new in early 1966 and was ordered by its first owner with many desirable options, including single seats, air conditioning, heat absorbing windscreen and side glass, and a Becker Grand Prix radio. Presented in its original medium blue metallic over petrol blue colour scheme and with service documentation, books, tool roll, and spare wheel, this 600 sedan is numbers matching and presents very well.
The ‘Grosser Mercedes’ is an iconic symbol of motoring wealth and an automobile whose price new today would be almost unimaginable. It stands as a highlight of the 20th century production of Mercedes-Benz, and this example is sure to meet the standards of one seeking a fine example of this legendary automobile.
