Ford introduced several new features for the 1940 model year, plus a distinctive body design that many consider to be the pinnacle of the company’s styling for the prewar era. Technically, one of the most significant changes was relocating the gearshift lever from the floor to the steering column, a modern feature that was not only more convenient for the driver, but also increased front-seat legroom for passengers.
Ford also introduced sealed-beam headlights in 1940, finally eliminating the persistent problem of moisture degrading the reflectivity of headlights, which had relied on separate bulbs. The sealed beams sat at the front of the fenders in oval chrome housings that also incorporated the parking lights, merging earlier Fords' covered-headlight treatment with the improved efficiency and durability of the sealed-beam bulbs. For these reasons and more, the 1940 models are among the most coveted prewar Fords, with the DeLuxe Convertible like the one offered here being the most desirable body style.
This example has benefitted from diligent care over the years, to include a restoration. Adorning the front end of the car are several medallions indicating the Ford’s status as an Antique Automobile Club of America Senior National First Prize winner in 2007, a First Prize Grand National Winner in 2010, and a Dearborn Award from the Early Ford V-8 Club of America. Additionally, this DeLuxe Convertible was an entrant at the 2012 Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance and the 2003 Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance. Invoices from 2011 and 2012 document over $5,000 worth of cosmetic and mechanical work, further bolstering the quality and appeal of this highly attractive convertible.
An undeniable classic, the 1940 Ford DeLuxe Convertible presented here will continue to impress on the road and at shows across the country for years to come.
