For many, the 1934 model Packards, which the factory dubbed the Eleventh Series, represent the height of the company’s pre-war efforts. They were the final models with traditional open fenders, albeit gently skirted, and the upright radiator shell for which the company had become well known. In addition, the chassis’ adjustable Ride Control suspension and Bijur automatic lubrication produced a car that was a dream to drive. Books have been written solely about this model year Packard, and it is widely considered among the most beautiful and purely enjoyable of all Classic Era production automobiles.
The five-passenger phaeton offered here retains what is believed to be its original vehicle number tag, identifying it as having been delivered by Packard Chicago on 5 October 1934, as well as a service tag from the same dealer inside one of the doors. The engine is a correct 1934 unit but appears to be a replacement for this chassis. The car is finished in an elegant off-white with maroon fenders and moldings, red striping, and a maroon leather interior, all overseen by a proper maroon cloth top. Accessories throughout include dual driving lights; dual side-mounted spares with Packard See-Rite mirrors; a folding rear windshield; a luggage rack with covered trunk containing fitted luggage, a top boot, and side curtains; a dashboard-mounted radio; and a rear-view mirror with clock. The odometer at the time of cataloguing noted 7,964 miles, presumably that covered since restoration.
A handsomely presented and appointed Packard, this car would be a superb CCCA CARavan entrant, or a worthy addition to any show field. It showcases the marque’s finest year for design at its very best.
