The original Porsche Turbo Carrera turned the automotive universe on its ear on its introduction in 1974 and placed the German automaker squarely among the leaders of the supercar fraternity. In 1991, a second-generation Turbo arrived, packaged in the svelte Type 964 shell, and it too was a world-shaker. Unlike many exotics, the Turbo 3.3 could be driven on urban streets with a minimum of fuss. But given a straight piece of pavement and no legal interference, it was capable of near 170-mph performance.

Porsche's 964 was improved in nearly every aspect from the preceding Carrera 3.2. Porsche claimed that some 87 percent of its parts were all new, including the reshaped nose and tail, now fitted with smoothly molded thermoplastic bumper covers. The front suspension was new as well; the traditional torsion bars were upgraded to coil springs and shocks. The rear suspension retained Porsche's trailing arms and torsion bars. Brakes, of course, remained among the best in the world, with large cross-drilled and ventilated rotors all around.

The 964 Turbo's M30/69 engine produces a factory-rated 320 horsepower at 5,750 rpm thanks to a larger intercooler that dropped the temperature of the intake air and improved volumetric efficiency. This new and improved motor turned the Porsche Turbo 3.3 into the world's fastest-accelerating production car, bar none. Car and Driver declared the Turbo 3.3 "a rocketship" that could hit 60 miles an hour from a standstill in just over four seconds and fly through the quarter mile in the 12s at 108 mph.

This 964 Turbo 3.3 Coupe was completed at Zuffenhausen in early March 1991, and is one of just 674 US-market examples of the model. An accompanying build record and Porsche Production Specification sheet show that it still retains its striking and factory-correct Grand Prix White exterior over a black interior featuring a blend of leather and leatherette finishes. It was further equipped with a desirable suite of equipment which includes an electric sunroof, limited-slip differential, electric adjustable seats, and finer-grain “draped” leather for both front and rear seats.

Service records on file show that the car was delivered new to California and remained there until 2019, at which point it was acquired by the consignor, then showing approximately 54,950 miles.

This 1991 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.3 offers performance that is thrilling even by modern standards; its air-cooled, largely analog appeal, meanwhile is unmatched by anything presently offered. This example’s enticing specifications, rarity, and consummate state of presentation make it particularly appealing.
