The Donald Healey Motor Company debuted a 100 mph open-top sports car at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1952. The Healey Hundred, which was named for its intended top speed, attracted the interest of Austin Motor Company managing director Leonard Lord. The two signed an agreement, and the Austin-Healey 100 was on the road within a year.

Produced from 1959 through 1967 in three series, the Austin-Healey 3000 is arguably one of the most desirable of British sports cars and highly sought after by collectors and drivers alike. In many ways, it is nothing short of a motoring icon. A straight-six replaced the roadster’s four-cylinder engine in 1956, and in 1959 Austin-Healey reached into BMC’s lineup for the upsized 3.0-liter engine. The new car was badged Austin-Healey 3000, and it was aimed primarily at the American market, where its more powerful engine made the most of high-speed roads.

This Mark III BJ8 is a finely restored example of the most desirable of all 3000s. The Mark III incorporates all production improvements, and upgrades include the 150 hp engine, center-shift transmission, power brakes, softer trailing-arm rear suspension, walnut fascia dashboard, fold-down luggage shelf, armrests, arm bars, center console, and quieter exhaust system.

Restored by premier marque specialist Kurt Tanner Restorations, this example is reportedly a joy to drive. Benefitting from long-term recent ownership, the example offered is ready for its next caretaker. Finished in the attractive and original combination of Golden Beige Metallic with black upholstery, a more classic color combination couldn’t be had.

Included with the car is its original California black license plate, a binder with photographs of the restoration, black tonneau cover, tool roll, matching spare with leather belt holder, and its British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate. The consignor states there are zero aftermarket accessories on the car.

Ideal for weekend drives and equally at home on driving tours, this Austin-Healey is the quintessential British sports car.
