Before the commencement of the 20th century, numerous engineers and inventors were experimenting with transportation that was powered by an internal combustion engine. With the successful creation of the Benz Patent Motorwagen, Carl Benz would become the first to market a successful automobile that was powered by an internal combustion engine.
The first Benz three-wheel carriage was powered by a horizontally-mounted single cylinder engine. The power from the 3/4 horsepower engine was transferred to both rear chain-driven wheels, and pushed the car to a speed of eight miles per hour, which was recorded on one of the very first test runs. Technical innovations included electric ignition, mechanical valves and differential gearing. Benz continually improved his Motorwagen and patented it in 1886. He sold his first one in 1887, beginning a long history of German automotive innovation and excellence.
The replica offered here is shown in beautiful condition with a black frame and seat that is accentuated by the light colored wood throughout the automobile. The engine still bears the nice red paint on the engine and the pulleys, along with nicely polished brass and copper fuel and oil tanks.
