These distinctive automobiles were big news in 1949, centered on their engineering prowess with the release of a new overhead valve V-8 engine. The 1949 Cadillac has a position in postwar automotive history that may be without parallel. It combined the greatest engineering advance of the era with the ultimate in styling popularity. It was unquestionably the dominant American automobile of the late 1940s. Its 331-cid, 160-hp high compression overhead valve V-8 established industry standards that would prevail for decades.

The distinctive Club Coupe “fastback” design was often referred to as a “Sedanette.” It represented an aerodynamically efficient body with graceful, fluid and subtle lines that was married to the singularly responsive new powerplant, making the 1949 Cadillac a road-going machine. Driving became the kind of exhilarating experience that one did not normally associate with a large automobile. They were considered to be a fine blend of typical Cadillac luxury and everyday motoring practicalities. Each was distinguished by the coachwork expected of Fisher at that time; the handsome interiors were designed and styled by Fleetwood.

This particular example is reported as being found as a barn find and then undergoing a professional frame-on restoration that was completed in 2009. It is finished in Cadillac color code 2; Triumph Blue, which is beautifully accented by the striking bright trim elements which were done by Finishing Touches of Chicago. The interior is also quite clean and tidy, presented in a tasteful gray shade. In 2001, the car is reported to have had the engine completely rebuilt, along with the application of new exhaust system, plus the rebuilding of the Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, master cylinder, brakes, steering box, pinion seal and more. The entire car is said to have received the proper attention and is quite the good driver.

With only 6,409 Series 61 Club Coupes produced by Cadillac in 1949, this will not be a commonly seen or displayed model of car. To no surprise, this Cadillac ‘Sedanette’ has been awarded numerous Best in Class victories in local Wisconsin shows.
