The first production Thunderbird rolled off the line on September 9, 1954 and when enough cars were produced, Ford introduced the car to the public on October 22. Reportedly, dealers received 4,000 deposits prompting the company to revise its sales estimates upward. Standard were power steering, brakes, windows and four-way seat, as well as an available radio, heater, and choice of three-speed manual or Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission. With a gutsy 292-cid V-8 under the hood, the power to effortlessly cruise the new Interstates of America was instantly available.
Thunderbird triumphed over the sales of the Corvette as a result of its clean styling, creature comforts, and V-8 engine trouncing Corvette’s production in 1955 totaling 16,155 units to the Corvette’s 700.
Painted a classic Torch Red with matching red interior and tan convertible roof, this two-seat ‘Bird is described as “a very nice car that is properly restored to stock condition.” As a recent restoration, it is reported to run and drive nicely. It comes complete with both hard and soft tops, wide white wall tires on Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels, Town & Country radio, power steering, automatic transmission, and rear fender skirts. This is one great Thunderbird for CTCI shows and tours.
