The Metropolitan was a completely different type of car from any other that was being built at that time. It was born from the conviction that there was a need in America for a low-priced and finely presented shorter wheelbase car that was luxuriously finished and precision-built. The Metropolitan is a handsome, head-turning car that was marketed as being breath-taking and beautiful – yet it could hustle up the steepest hills, cover rough roads and do it with unbelievable smoothness of operation and in a very economical manner.
This red and white two-tone example has been with the same caring owner and family for the last 25 years and has experienced a frame-off restoration that was professionally completed over a two year period by Pit Stop in North Hollywood, California. The original inline four-cylinder engine has been completely disassembled; powdercoated, and then rebuilt using genuine Austin components; it is matched to a three-speed manual transmission. The seat has been re-upholstered in original fabric and has only 1,500 miles travelled since the restoration was completed.
