The late Fifties were only the warm-up for the horsepower wars that got serious as the Sixties began. Yet the markets enthusiastic acceptance of performance was even faster than the product planners at the Big Three could react. The powertrain guys had robust engines falling out of their pockets; the stylists however were locked into long product cycles and could not respond as quickly.
The 348 cubic inch V-8 of 1961 was replaced with a 409 cubic inch V-8 for 1962. Made legendary by The Beach Boys hit single “409,” the big-block 1962 Impala will always be a fine representation of 1960s American styling.
This particular 409 was born with the 409-cid, 409 horsepower engine and was restored in 1998. It has had little use since, but is said to be in top mechanical condition. It was previously owned and restored by Ron Shaver of Shaver Specialties, who builds engine for Tony Stewart, so the 409 has had some slight improvements made. It currently has 11:1 compression, factory heavy-duty 4.11:1 Posi-traction rear end, and Summers Brother rear axle. The interior retains its original front seats and door panels as well as a rear window defroster. This car is fitted with and originally came with the column-mounted tachometer and four-speed floor-shift transmission. The period-style aftermarket wheels give a hint to the cars musclecar personality. This exceptional 409 is sure to excite its next owner and keep them smiling and pinned in their seat.
