In the 1970s, Modified racing remained a popular form of “stock car” competition. Though many Modified races remained on the fringes of the rules, the well-organized NASCAR National Modified Championship gave the sport a body of rules from which to draw, helping the sport to standardize. The Modifieds ran at many of the same tracks that the Winston Cup, now the Monster Energy Series Cup, cars did. This included the incredibly fast superspeedways at Talladega and Daytona as well as the slightly shorter tracks like Charlotte. The car offered here also ran at these tracks and represents an interesting era in American racing.

This unique AMC Gremlin Super Speedway Modified was built by the late Freeman Treadway, a legendary race car builder who put together Fords for Richard Petty in 1969. The combination of Chevrolet power with the surprisingly aerodynamic AMC Gremlin was a popular and race-winning setup. Several Modified championships were won in Gremlins, including one won by driver Billy Osmun in 1978. Osmun, Joe Severage, and NASCAR legend “Chargin’ Charlie” Glotzbach are all said to have driven this very car. Glotzbach is said to have piloted the car at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The names of all three men adorn the flanks of the car, along with the names of sponsors from the period.

Today, the car is offered from a prominent collection and is in excellent overall condition. The Chevrolet 427-cu. in. V-8 engine, backed by a four-speed manual transmission, remains as powerful and raucous as ever. The car wears a no-frills white paint job with a blue painted cockpit area. Stewart Warner gauges, racing seat, and period-correct padded steering wheel complete the spartan interior. With its documented race history, the car would be eligible for a number of different judging classes or, with proper preparation, a return to competition in spirited vintage competition.
