Bavarian Motor Works built the 850i as grand touring coupe from 1989 to 1999. This was BMW’s flagship automobile and as such, it was powered by a 296-hp, 5.0-litre V-12. The 8 Series supercar offered the first V-12 engine mated to a six-speed manual gearbox on a road car. It was also one of the first vehicles to be fitted with an electronic "fly-by-wire" throttle and among the first BMW’s to use a multi-link rear axle.
Sales of the 8 Series were affected by the global recession of the early 1990s, the Persian Gulf War, and energy price spikes causing BMW to pull the plug in the North American market in 1997 after selling only 7,232 cars over seven years. BMW continued production for Europe until 1999. The ultimate worldwide production total was 31,062. This automatic-equipped car comes complete with all options including a sunroof and factory cell phone!
