Ferrari introduced a stunning new mid-engine car at the 1971 Turin Motor Show to compete head to head with the Lamborghini Miura and Maserati Bora. Totally original from the ground up, it featured a low, sensuous Pininfarina design and hand-built body by Scaglietti. It was powered by a mid-mounted “boxer” 12-cylinder engine. This model, named 365 GT4 BB, was finally released as a production car in 1973 and marketed as the fastest road car ever offered by Ferrari. In keeping with tradition, the car was relentlessly refined. In 1981, Ferrari introduced the 512 BBi at the Paris Salon, with the “i” reflecting the installation of Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The 512 BBi was capable of remarkable performance numbers: zero-to-sixty in 5.4 seconds, a top speed of at least 175 mph and a quarter-mile time of 14.3 seconds at 103 mph.
This particular BBi Boxer was ordered new in 1984 by Alexander Patullo of High Bridge, New Jersey through “Sport Auto Roma” in Italy. The price new was 90,000 lire or 62,300 USD. The car’s “Certificato d’origine” was issued ten days later on July 18, 1984. Mr. Patullo specified the deletion of the lower black boxer trim for a solid color look in Rossa Corsa. It was cleared by U.S. Customs on July 31st after which it was delivered to CBS Auto Engineering of Bergen, New Jersey for compliance and approval of U.S. EPA and DOT regulations. This took time, in fact some ten months, and was completed on May 31, 1985 after which the state of New Jersey issued a patient Mr. Patullo license plates and a new title.
Over the next 23 years he carefully maintained and serviced his pride and joy without any consideration of cost. Mr. Patullo only drove the Boxer on perfect sunny days, averaging 230 miles during each year of his ownership. To date, the car has covered less than 5,300 miles since new. In 2010 the current owner, after repeated attempts, was able to purchase the car through an intermediary. This BBi is offered with all its original books, tools and documentation. All services are fresh and up to date with no mileage since their conclusion.
This is an opportunity not to be missed by Ferrari enthusiasts. A perfect, time-warp, no-stories example of the iconic 512 BBi simply does not become available with any regularity.
