Frank Nichols had a good sense of humour. Not only did he name his car Elva (the Anglicized spelling for the French phrase meaning “she goes”), but together with the usual sports cars, his racing stable included an Elva-prepared 1,172 cc Ford van, which became famous for blowing off the doors of considerably more powerful orthodox sedans at Brands Hatch. His credentials as a fellow who enjoyed a spirited good time thusly demonstrated, it is not surprising that Elvas were thoroughly likeable sports cars. “Gutsy”, the Elva Engineering Co., Ltd. brochures read, “. . . and the fun begins at eighty”.
In addition to SCCA racing in the United States, Elvas competed in the Formula Junior races of 1958 through to 1963, a category designed to offer young drivers an opportunity to compete. Initially, the winning cars were from Italy, including Stanguellini, OSCA and Taraschi (all Fiat front-engines) and DeSanctis, Wainer and Moretti (with rear engines). The United Kingdom-built Elva competed for a short time, as its success was imitated by competitors, Gemini and Lola, all of which were outclassed in 1960 by the new Cooper Junior and Ford-powered Lotus 18. It is thought that approximately 75 Elva 100 Formula Juniors were produced.
This Elva has a long racing history in the United States and has been restored retaining much of its originality. The 994 cc BMC-derived racing motor is fresh and is equipped with twin SU carburettors, which retain their original Rytune intake manifolds, as well as Rytune velocity stacks. It is also equipped with its rare Elva 15? magnesium racing wheels and original steering wheel. It comes complete with its VCSSA logbook and FIA HTP papers and is sure to be a joy to manoeuvre around a challenging road course.
