For 1965, Mercedes-Benz’s 300 SE ‘Fintail’ was the top of the line and even today it remains a luxurious and highly capable automobile. The example offered here represents the luxury and class of this much sought-after model.

One of four models to share the new ‘fintail’ styling, which debuted at the 1959 Frankfurt Auto Show, the 300 SE saloon entered initial production for 1961. Although somewhat similar in appearance to the contemporary 220, the 300 SE was significantly more refined. Self-levelling air suspension, power-assisted steering, servo-assisted disc brakes and a dual master cylinder were all standard for 1965. The 2,996-cc, Bosch fuel-injected, six-cylinder engine produced 170 bhp, sufficient for around 200 km/h. Of particular interest to enthusiasts is that the 300 SE’s engine is a detuned version of the same engine that powered the 300 SL.

As is the case with Mercedes-Benz’s flagship models, 300 SE ownership was confined to a few very lucky, very wealthy individuals. One could have bought two of the legendary E-Type Jaguars for the price of a single 300 SE! Because of its expense and exclusivity, only 5,202 had been sold when production ceased in 1965.

The 300 SE offered here is finished in its original colours of beige with a beautifully patinated original turquoise leather interior. Properly stored in a garage for some 28 years, it retains a huge level of originality. It is offered in superb condition and is said to perform beautifully. Its history file includes its original books, invoices and some documentation chronicling long-term ownership, and confirming that its engine and gearbox are both original.

Highly original examples of top-of-the-line automobiles are greatly sought after on today’s market. This car, offered with a history file, and approximately 55,000 miles on the odometer, this 300 SE will make an ideal companion for many years and many miles.
