The styling of the Mercedes-Benz 220 was similar to its smaller counterpart, the 170 S, except for the 220’s integrated headlights in the front wings, as the 170 S implemented an older freestanding headlight design. This gave the 220 model a slightly more modern look and a much needed facelift. Out of the four different body styles that the 220 was produced in, a mere 1,278 were built in cabriolet A form.
The example on offer here displays as a thoughtfully executed cosmetic restoration. The lengthy hood conceals the overhead-cam, six-cylinder engine, which exhibits a careful and thorough detailing. The engine block has been refinished in black, with the valve cover wearing a muted aluminium finish. In addition, many of the ancillary components have been detailed with paint or attentively cleaned.
The coachwork is finished in a deep red hue, whilst the convertible top is finished in tan cloth and adorned with elegant landau bars. An expanse of brightwork garnishes the exterior and presents minor patina, which is evidence of thorough polishing.
The interior trimmings have been nicely refinished. A plethora of tan leather encompasses the seats, door panels, and dashboard, with all showing negligible wear and no obvious blemishes, whilst the floor and kick panels are clad in complementing tan carpeting, which also shows no obvious fatigue. A supplementary array of rich, dark wood trim wears a newer satin finish, which displays light hazing near some switchgear mounts. The interior chrome has been buffed and exhibits some wear, but it would improve in appearance with a thorough detail.
The spacious boot, standard on many of the luxurious post-war Mercedes-Benz vehicles, appears to be quite orderly, with matching tan carpeting on the upper shelf and black carpeting lining the lower shelf. In addition, a tool kit, a convertible top boot, and provisions for luggage are all found within. This well-appointed Cabriolet is a fine candidate to be enjoyed just as it was in the 1950s, top up or down.
