The Panhard M3 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) was designed in the late 1960s as a lightweight, wheeled apc. It was designed using many components from the AML series of armored cars. Production of the M3 began in 1971. The primary apc variant has the driver sitting at the front of the vehicle with a vision hatch that can be opened when in non-combat areas. When buttoned up, vision is via three periscopes. The commander is seated below a small turret mounted in the center of the hull. The passengers enter/exit through two doors at the rear of the vehicle or through doors mounted on either side of the hull between the wheels. Three hatches are provided on each side of the vehicle to allow the troops to fire their weapons from within. Two additional ports are located in the rear doors. Six different versions of the M3 have been produced in addition to the standard apc: air-defense, repair, engineer, command, battlefield surveillance radar and ambulance.

The M3 has been exported to several African and Middle Eastern countries. The Irish Army also used it.
