40 bhp, 200.5 cu. in. four-cylinder L-Head engine with single two-barrel carburetor, three-speed manual transmission, live front suspension and three-quarter floating rear axle with front and rear transverse leaf springs, and four-wheel mechanical drum brakes. Wheelbase: 103.5 in.

For 1931, Ford offered a variety of different body styles for their light trucks. In addition to purchasing a bare chassis and drivetrain for a custom body, buyers could choose from open and closed cabs and panel delivery models, among other styles, offering a distinct model suited to everyone’s different tastes and intended use.

The closed cab pickup debuted mid-1931 and offered five more cubic feet of cargo space than the previous year’s model. This proved to be the most popular body style by a landslide, and 98,166 examples were produced. Incredibly, 1931 Ford trucks were offered in 38 different colors, showing that the company had come a long way from Henry Ford’s memorable phrase, “You can have any color, as long as it’s black”!

Donated to the AACA Museum in 2012 by an individual in New York, this 1931 Ford Model A Pickup saw frequent use by the museum. It had been used in their Christmas display and also saw use in their food and toy drives. Although the vehicle is noted as being in running and driving condition, it has largely remained on static display and therefore may require some degree of re-commissioning before being used on a regular basis.

By far the most popular body style when new, closed cab pickups have remained popular with collectors to this day. Whether put into use as a seasonal vehicle at a summer home or used for the occasional Sunday cruise, Model A Pickups are just as practical as they are cool and will surely never go out of style.
