Henry Ford once again made automotive history when, on March 31, 1932, he announced the Ford V-8. This type of engine was not a novelty by that time, but when offered at traditional Ford low prices, it was a true milestone. Henry Ford had this 221-cubic-inch-displacement motor developed in extreme secrecy by a small workforce that was working under his direct supervision. After overcoming initial teething problems, this new V-8 would power Ford automobiles for the ensuing two decades.
Few Ford enthusiasts would dispute Ford’s claim of “Greater Beauty, Greater Comfort, and Greater Safety” for its 1935 models. The narrower radiator grille lost its sharply vee’d base, and four horizontal bars helped accentuate the 1935 model’s new lower and more streamlined appearance. In profile, the Ford windshield was seen to be more sharply sloped than before. DeLuxe models had bright windshield and grille trim work, as well as dual exposed horns and twin taillights.
The DeLuxe Three-Window Coupe offered here has received an older high-quality, frame-off restoration in classic Washington Blue, which was striped in red and is over a tan leather interior. While the paint is no longer fresh, it is still very good, with only light scratching and no serious cracking. Panel fit is described as being perfect all the way around, and the doors close very easily and solidly. The engine bay is properly finished throughout, with correct Ford hoses, clamps, and wiring, and it has a wonderfully authentic appearance. The car rides on painted wire wheels, which are shod in wide whitewall bias-ply tires that have stainless center caps and trim rings. The car’s mileage is recorded around 45,000, which is believed by the owner to be original mileage. It had spent 20 years in a collection in Texas before Mr. Day’s acquisition.
This is a wonderful, well-maintained Ford of high quality, and it is right at home in Jeffrey Day’s fine collection of Blue Oval products.
