The Isetta was a true “people’s car,” manufactured by various firms worldwide under license from the original creator, Italy’s Iso. The most famous was, of course, BMW, which took the initial Isetta design, developed it with their typical efficiency and skill, and gave it the blessing of their large-scale marketing efforts. BMW made the Isetta “cheap chic,” which was popular among the fashion set as it was among those seeking economy.

The European-spec “sliding window” model offered here is fresh “off the racks” of the Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum, and while in somewhat rough condition and requiring restoration, it is also a fabulous example of a “preservation” microcar. It is original and unrestored in all respects, still wearing the paintwork, chrome trim, and interior with which it left the Bayerische Motoren Werke over half a century ago. This is likely one of the most complete, intact, original Isettas, and examination of it provides a valuable glimpse at how they were built when new. With its lovely patina, it has its own unique, lovable charm, and it could easily be restored to a high standard.
