120 bhp, 1,897 cc inline four-cylinder engine with two Solex carburetors, four-speed manual transmission, independent dual-wishbone front suspension with coil springs and tube shocks, rear single-pivot swing axle with coil springs and tube shocks, and four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes. Wheelbase: 94.5 in.

With the encouragement of Max Hoffman, an American dealer in high-end imported automobiles in the early 1950s, Mercedes-Benz introduced a street version of the racing 300 SL Gullwing in 1954. The exclusive and expensive coupe was intended to promote his dealerships, but with it, the company also introduced a more affordable roadster version with many of the same styling cues, the 190 SL.

From its introduction, the 190 SL has been a favorite with enthusiasts, satisfying to drive, comfortable over long distances, straightforward to maintain, and eye-catching in appearance. Based on the success of this first personal sports car in the Mercedes line-up and acknowledging the growing competition from both U.S. and European companies with their own sports cars, Mercedes-Benz would replace the 190 SL in 1963 with the 230 SL built on the new W113 chassis.

This 1961 190 SL, with all numbered components matching the factory data card, was totally dismantled and given a nut-and-bolt restoration 10 years ago by noted specialist Bruce Adams in the attractive combination of Grey/Blue (DB 317) exterior finish with complementary Natural (DB 1068) leather interior trim and grey convertible top. As part of the restoration, the original engine, transmission, and rear differential were completely rebuilt by Black Forest LLC, and all gauges and controls were rebuilt and adjusted to operate as new. Black Forest also rebuilt and reupholstered the seats. The finished car won Best of Show in the 2006 International 190 SL Group Concours d’Elegance.

With the goal of having a car that would be reliable and satisfying to drive, the owner subsequently made a number of subtle improvements including an electronic distributor, a gear-reduction starter, halogen headlamps, dimmable instrument lights, modern water hoses and hose clamps, K&N performance air filters, and seat belts. All original parts have been retained and are included.

The previous owner, an officer of the 190 SL Group, continued to carefully maintain the car in award-winning condition, with many trophies to its credit, while driving it a total of 6,000 miles on club tours to enjoy its performance in the company of fellow enthusiasts. During that time, careful attention has been paid to regular maintenance. As presented here, the engine bay and components, underside, and trunk are in pristine show-quality condition. Cocomats are included to protect the original rubber floor mats and trunk, and tools and bag, manuals, and ownership documentation accompany the sale as well. Photo documentation of the original restoration and running improvements and upgrades, as well as receipts for the work, are also included.

As presented for sale, this is one of the very few examples of collectable classic cars that is likely to grow in value while simultaneously capable of being shown with pride and driven for pleasure.
