In 1961, Jaguar released a successful combination of everything they learned from winning races and listening to customer input, the E-Type. With its monocoque passenger compartment/tail section, tube-framed engine bay, and tilting bonnet, it clearly descended from the D-Type, but its well-appointed interior, civilized 3.8-liter XK engine (directly from the XK 150S), and compliant suspension made it an ideal two place touring car and replacement for the XK 140 and 150.

The example presented here was the recipient of a comprehensive restoration several years ago. Reportedly, $115,000 was spent on the restoration, the workmanship of which is truly superb, and the overall quality has held up very well. The body was taken to bare metal, and then repainted and reassembled. During the process, a few performance upgrades were performed, including the installation of a 4.2-specification fully synchromesh gearbox, an upgraded starter, and Koni shocks. The engine compression was increased to 10:1, it was balanced and blueprinted, and all cylinders were lined with stainless steel. The carburetors were rebuilt with original steel shafts. In addition, the present owner has fitted a stock-appearing, larger radiator and carefully hidden electronic timing. (The original radiator will be supplied with the car, should the new owner wish to fit it.) Stainless steel brake lines were fitted. The wiper blades are even NOS, purchased from the AMCO Museum!

In August of 2004, this superb example took first place in the champion division at the San Diego JCNA Concours with a score of 99.9 points. It is beautifully finished in British Racing Green with a Biscuit interior, and it is fitted with five chrome wire wheels mounted on five Dunlop Road Speed RS5 tires with tubes. The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate that accompanies this car, along with restoration photos, reveals an August 7, 1962 build date, and all Lucas fuses currently fitted are dated August 1962. It is reported that this fixed head coupe runs exceptionally well and will provide its next owner with a true dual-purpose car that will be not only be a pleasure to drive but a pleasure to show as well.
