Built during the early 1990s while in the ownership of a San Francisco SCCA member at a cost of about $140,000, this one-of-a-kind, race-ready Italian rocket almost immediately dominated the competition after its completion in 1994. With seven race outings in the 1995-1996 period, the 308 competed in GT2 at Laguna Seca, took victory there in June 1995 and earned a pair of second-place finishes. Two entries at Infineon Raceway resulted in another first overall in October 1995.
La Habra, California’s Herman Thelier of Thelier Automotive Technik was responsible for the car’s construction. Starting with a solid 308 chassis clad in Ferrari 288 GTO body panels, the car was fitted with an SCCA-approved integral roll-cage, and Tilton and Wilwood brake components provided improved stopping power. The suspension was tuned for maximum performance with a set of blue Koni shocks, the same as used on the Ferrari 333 sports racer, while another Ferrari legend, the 355, contributed its excellent steering rack assembly. An SCCA-approved fuel system was added as well. As completed, the 308 tipped the scales at just over 2,100 pounds and provided fierce performance.
The current owner acquired the Ferrari during the summer of 2008 and returned to the track at Laguna Seca and Infineon Raceway, with one race at each circuit. The same year a 3.0-liter Quattrovalvole V-8 engine from a Ferrari Mondial was installed, and the exterior was refinished in 2011. Described as being in excellent overall condition with a very presentable interior, this hot Ferrari 308 Racing Car is also complete with its official SCCA logbook and documentation of its construction.
