Introduced in 1950, the Volkswagen Type 2 was the German automaker's second model offering, after the original Type 1 "Beetle." Meant as a utilitarian workhorse for post-WWII Europe, the Type 2 would evolve into countless variants and, most notably, earn cult-like status in the Southern California surfing community.

This rare 1964 Volkswagen Deluxe '21-Window' example represents the best of all possible worlds for fans of VW's iconic classic. As an already exceedingly original and rust-free example, the current owner decided a total restoration would make a good thing even better. Corey Smith, of Smitty's Auto Body in Costa Mesa, California, spearheaded the nut-and-bolt restoration, and utilized the best specialists to ensure everything was done to the highest possible standard.

It combines highly detailed touches, such as the period-correct trim and "ice pick" door handles, along with subtle modifications that make this Microbus more user-friendly in modern traffic. A more powerful 2,007-cc four-cylinder engine - custom designed to look like the original motor - and rebuilt four-speed manual transmission, with upgraded gearing, help make this Microbus better-suited to highway driving.

Perched inside the cabin, the driver is immediately greeted by a "barn door" steering wheel (a popular retrofit from 1955 and earlier buses), along with authentic gauges and original dash-mounted clock. All the seat frames were blasted and powder-coated. Upholstery work was done by West Coast Classics in Los Angeles, a shop specializing in vintage VW interiors. The restoration was completed in June 2016.

While enormously popular when new, this 21-window Type 2, finished in Deluxe trim, represents one of the absolute rarest and most coveted examples of VW's legendary Microbus.
