Few cars have enjoyed such enduring popularity or have so strongly influenced the sports car world as those of England’s MG. Starting from the TA in 1936, the MG T-series opened a whole new world of affordable motoring enjoyment for enthusiasts with its simplicity, capable handling and good looks. Following World War II, the first British sports car to capture American hearts was the MG TC, which featured the overhead valve XPAG engine first developed for the prewar TB. The TC’s success inspired the TD, which debuted in 1949 specifically for the US market with improved handling and, for the first time, left-hand drive. The TF, which followed in late 1953, represented a major stylistic evolution with its integrated headlamps, new bonnet, sloping hoodline and raked radiator grille.

While the TF faced stiff criticism from some, America’s motoring press welcomed it warmly. In its December 1954 issue, Road & Track noted, “after last year’s test we asked if the TF was really that good. It is, and more. Even though the MG is the lowest priced sports car on the market, it is the accepted standard of comparison.”

This 1955 TF 1250 has been in the current owner’s collection since 2005 and was fully restored for him by Symbolic Motor Car Company in San Diego, California. Finished in an attractive shade of yellow, the car has been only carefully used and well maintained over the years. The chrome wire wheels, leather wrapped steering wheel, and black leather upholstery make this TF stand out from the rest. Service records on file show extensive mechanical work done in 2017 and today the car starts easily without any hesitation. The owner reports it is a thrilling drive and with the small size of the car and the wind in your face, an exciting drive can be had in a TF while maintaining the speed limit.
