When Shelby’s GT500 was introduced in 1967, it sat comfortably at the top of the pyramid of Mustang hierarchy. Under the hood lay a gargantuan 428-cubic inch V-8 that was topped with twin Holley four-barrel carburetors and could produce 360 brake horsepower. Not only did the GT500 offer more in the way of power, but it also offered more in terms of luxury accoutrements than the slightly less powerful GT350. Unlike the GT350, the GT500 was offered in both coupe and convertible body styles, giving customers the option to let that 428 put some wind through their hair. In opposition to the GT350, which had always been marketed as a race-ready Mustang, the GT500 Convertible could be marketed towards individuals looking to enjoy race-bred performance and modern luxury conveniences on the street.
Nineteen sixty-nine would mark the last year of production for the GT500, even though some late 1969 models were sold as 1970s. That model year also saw the introduction of a restyled Mustang, and the GT500 received all the same changes. The car’s overall footprint increased, but the styling was markedly more aggressive. At just over $5,000 in 1969, the GT500 Convertible was the most expensive Shelby Mustang money could buy, and the first owner of the example presented here opted for a variety of optional extras.
According to this car’s Marti Report and factory invoice, this particular 1969 GT500 Convertible is one of just seventy-five examples painted in the very eye-catching shade of Grabber Yellow. It was originally delivered to Gotham Ford of New York City, and it is very well optioned, with an automatic transmission, air conditioning, a Traction-Lok rear differential, an AM/FM radio, tinted glass, and 15-inch tires with the heavy-duty suspension, amongst other options. It was restored to a very high standard in its original configuration, and it also includes it original owner’s manual.
This GT500 has been a prized member of Mr. Pack’s collection for several years. It has always held a place of honor within his collection, and it has been very well maintained and preserved in his care. The Grabber Yellow paint exhibits quite a shine, while the interior shows very few signs of use.
