100 bhp, 414 cu. in. T-head inline six-cylinder engine, three-speed manual transmission, solid front and live rear axles with semi-elliptic leaf springs, and vacuum-boosted four-wheel mechanical brakes. Wheelbase: 138 in.

In contrast to its rivals, Peerless and Packard, which introduced a V-8 and V-12, respectively, in 1916, Pierce-Arrow held firm to tried and true inline six-cylinder power through 1927. What a six it was! Except for the smaller, lighter, and less expensive Model 80 introduced in 1925, Pierce-Arrow’s trademark sixes were large and powerful T-head designs, with four valves per cylinder and dual ignition systems.

Produced from 1926 to 1928, the Series 36 represents the final evolution of the six-cylinder Pierce-Arrow, making this Three-Passenger Doctor Coupe of 1927 a natural in the collection of long-time Pierce-Arrow enthusiasts Richard and Linda Kughn.

This Doctor Coupe, as it was properly referred to, was formerly owned by noted collector Ed Oberhaus, for whom it was restored to award-winning standards from a very solid and complete original car in the early 1990s, a process documented by a large album of photography that accompanies the car. Its rich plum red finish is well-complemented by a lavishly appointed interior with bolstered red mohair upholstery and matching carpets, rich varnished wood window trim, a nicely wood grained dashboard, and bud vases on the door pillars. The driver and front passenger sit on cushioned bench seats that would look at home sitting before a lady’s vanity; the passenger seat folds forward and out of the way for easy access to the rear passenger seat, which holds one passenger alongside a built-in hat box! The rear windows are thoughtfully shaded by inertia-reel curtains.

The exterior brightwork is correctly nickeled, including the hubs of the dual rear-mounted spares and taillights, and along with the artillery-style wooden wheels with their varnished spokes, they give this Pierce a delicate, jewelry box-like appearance. Given the car’s condition prior to restoration, the under 43,000 miles recorded may well be original.

Mr. and Mrs. Kughn proudly displayed this Pierce-Arrow at the 2010 CCCA Michigan Region Grand Classic, where it was judged, well over a decade after its restoration, at 99.25 points, good for a 1st Primary Award, truly an outstanding result. The car was also displayed, in the Kughns’ care, at the 2010 Pierce-Arrow Gathering at Hickory Corners. It remains virtually show-ready, with its paint, nickel, and interior still immaculate; the panels are smooth and beautifully finished, with accurate gaps, and in general, the car would require only a thorough detailing to prepare it for its next appearance on the grassy lawn of one’s choice.

Among the final T-head Pierces, this is certainly one of the best-finished and most attractive survivors, as it is filled with intricate design and lovely features and is showing typical Pierce quality in its every nut and bolt. It is simply spectacular.
