This lot includes a pair of 1:5 scale BMW M1 models created in Germany in the late 1970s. One is hand-decorated and the other undecorated. The idea of a decorated “Art” car was conceived by French auctioneer and racing driver Hervé Poulain when he commissioned Alexander Calder to decorate the BMW 3.0 CSL that he entered in the 1975 Le Mans. The models offered here were from the 50 “blanks” issued to various artists by BMW to decorate as they wished. The identity of the artist here is not known, and the other model of course remains blank and undecorated. Both models are highly presentable examples with turning wheels and are of fiberglass construction.
