Uruguayan artist Alfredo De la María began as a sports illustrator and equestrian painter, but he is known today for his unique paintings of historic racing scenes. After he began illustrating covers for automotive magazines in the 1980s, he opened his first exhibit of solely automotive-themed paintings, and he has been completely immersed with the subject since. De la María has a distinct impressionistic style of painting that dramatically captures the speed and excitement of auto racing.

This painting depicts the 1954 Grand Prix of Berlin held on the famous AVUS racetrack in Berlin, Germany. Karl Kling dominated the short-track race in a Mercedes-Benz W196, completing 60 laps in 2 hours and 19 minutes. The race control tower, now a historic monument, stands resolutely in the background as Kling speeds around the iconic banked turn, followed closely by Jean Behra in a Gordini T16. This nicely detailed, highly presentable example proudly displays Kling’s instrumental role in returning Mercedes-Benz to international competition in the early 1950s.
