The Bussing-NAG 4500 A-1 represents one of several different manufacturers’ standardized military truck models in the 4-1/2-ton, heavy (schwerer) truck class. In addition to Bussing-NAG, Daimler-Benz, Henschel, Saurer of Austria, MAN and a consortium of OAF, Klockner-Humbolt-Deutz, all produced nearly identical 4500 series truck models. The long wheelbase chassis (16-feet) was designed to accommodate oversize loads including, on occasion, smaller military vehicles. The 4-1/2-ton 4500 truck series was developed as a result of guidelines established by the Schell-Program of 1938. General Adolf von Schell, Director of Motorization for the Wehrmacht (German military), proposed the cut back of procurement of vehicles to just a few standard chassis types. This number was cut from 113 to 30. Truck models were reduced to classes of 1, 1-1/2, 3, 4-1/2 and 6-1/2-tons, most with a basic 4x2 (S-Type) and a 4x4 (A Type) version, as displayed. The Bussing-NAG 4500 series was preceded in production by the 500 series produced from 1940 to 1941. The 4500 series were manufactured from 1941 to 1945. Nearly 15,000 Bussing-NAG 4-1/2-tons were built, with various body types including shop vans and wreckers.
