Steinway & Sons (Hamburg, Germany)

This beautiful Steinway upright contains the extremely rare Welte-Mignon T-98 or "Green Welte" player mechanism, using green paper rolls, which faithfully reproduces the playing of many famous classical and popular pianists of its day. The T-98 system was a late development with mechanically simplified expression mechanisms; only about a dozen pianos of all brands together are known with this system.

Formerly in the collections of Welte expert Hans Schmitt and then Klaus Fischer, this example is in excellent playing condition. Included with the piano is a matching roll cabinet, both in ebony finish, and a fine group of green Welte T-98 rolls. The serious Welte aficionado should consider bidding on both this piano and the red paper Welte-Mignon T-100 Vorsetzer in this sale, enabling a perfect comparison of how the two reproducing systems sound when playing the very same piano! 57x64x45 inches.
