The 1930 French Grand Prix was held on the Circuit de Morlaas, located just outside of the city of Pau. Due to a lack of interest, the race was postponed and changed from an International Formula event to a Formula Libre race, allowing for a wider variety of entrants. The Italian teams were unfortunately absent from the Grand Prix because of the date change, and as such, most of the 25 entrants were French teams.

Standing out amongst the crowd was the 4½-litre supercharged Bentley entered by Tim Birkin, wearing #18. Although Birkin did not win, the massive Bentley did unexpectedly well against the much more nimble Bugattis and finished in an impressive 2nd place. The 1930 French Grand Prix was the only race in which the “Blower” Bentley achieved notable racing success.
