A new era for Ducati began in 1985 with the transfer of control from the Italian Government EFIM Group to Cagiva, based in Varese in Northern Italy. Their first all-new model was the Paso, and this represented a significant departure for Ducati. Designed to have a broader appeal, Cagiva realised that for Ducati to survive and sell more than a few thousand hard-edged sport bikes each year, a new generation of bikes was required. Using the 1986 750 F1 engine as a basis, the 750 Paso incorporated a number of significant changes, notably a reversed rear cylinder head to allow the installation of a dual-throat automotive-style Weber carburettor. When it came to the chassis and running gear the Paso was also unlike any previous model of Ducati. The box-section steel frame was a traditional double downtube, full cradle design, with an aluminium swing-arm and linkage rear suspension. Integral to the design were the 16-inch Oscam wheels fitted with low profile radial tires. The Paso represented an important step forward for Ducati. The example presented here is very original and unmodified, with presentable paint.
