A Philips Reel-to-Reel tape recorder or ‘Recordergram’ complete with original instruction brochure manufactured between 1955 to 1958.
Along with the recorder is a tape, in W.O.’s own voice, which discusses various aspects of the Bentley story. The recording was used in conjunction with his book publisher to write his autobiography published in 1958. The tape recording runs for circa 45 minutes and covers the Le Mans races during the 1920s, the fabled White House Crash, the hidden chassis fault within the new 4.5-Litre Bentley, the importance of effective pit stops, racing policy, and the demise of Bentley Motors.
Moreover, what is particularly evident is the absolute heartbreak and bewilderment that W.O. experienced both in terms of the failure of the company and his enforced move to Rolls-Royce in 1932.
This recording expresses far more than the written word, the emotions still raw despite the passing of circa thirty years when the recording was made. This recording has been transposed onto a CD and this lot includes the recorder, the tape recording, and CD.
*The tape recorder is in working order and has recently been serviced. However, due to the age and historical importance of the machine, it should be used with absolute due care and attention.
