Graham Hill’s career covered a period when safety became an increasingly important issue. Incredibly, drivers risked everything at circuits where even basic medical provisions, or an ambulance, were not present. Jackie Stewart, Jo Bonnier and Graham Hill were instrumental in campaigning against a situation that today seems absurd.

Crashes involving fire were some of the deadliest and DuPont’s invention of the revolutionary Nomex fire-resistant fibre in 1961 was a turning point in accident survivability. By the late 1960s, most drivers on major grids wore Nomex race overalls and they are still worn throughout the motorsport world today.

This race overall, produced by Jay Brand Nomex, was worn by Hill in period and has been retained by the family since. Starting with a blank suit, with Hill’s name embroidered above the right chest pocket and typical red stripes, Bette sewed sponsors for each race on to the suit.

Suits worn by Graham Hill are extremely rare so this example should not be missed by collectors.
